Ocasio Routs Rodriguez; Eyes Title Shot!

Rising lightweight sensation Angel Ocasio (7-0-2, 2KO's) made a statement on Saturday night December the 8th to the lightweight division that he was coming strong and determined with a thrilling second round technical knockout of Esteban Rodriguez (6-4-1, 2KO's) at the newly renovated McGonigle Hall at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.

Coming off of two 2012 Philly fights of the year candidates, each against Jason Sosa which ended in draws, Ocasio looked to make a statement. And he did it in a big way on the untelevised portion of NBC Sports Fight Night series promoted by Main Events, Peltz Boxing Promotions, and Goosen Tutor Promotions in association with Bam Boxing at McGonigle Hall on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia.

Ocasio's opponent on this evening was Esteban Rodriquez, who was coming off a majority decision loss to the very same Jason Sosa and had gone the distance with the PA State champion Naim Nelson. Rodriguez had never been stopped as a professional. He also own a recent victory over Cassius Clay on August 8th.2012. it was to be a terrific test for the MAK boxing fighter from North Philly

The 23 year-old Ocasio looked prime and ready as he entered the ring to do battle as he entered to a raucous applause from the two thousand plus in attendance.

Rodriquez was known as a pressure fighter, but Ocasio took it away in the early as he mixed in some good body shots. Rodriquez returned fire with two right crosses that found their mark, but Ocasio walked right through them. By mid round you could see the power of Ocasio start to take over as he dug a few body shots while mixing up single shots up top. Rodriguez returned fire, but Ocasio continued to find the openings and finally sent Esteban to the canvas with a well-placed left hook under the ribs in the closing seconds of the opening stanza. It didn’t look he would get up, but Rodriguez is a warrior and rose to his feet as the bell sounded to end the round.

Rodriquez tried to keep Ocasio off with short right hands, but determined North Philadelphian was taking control with heavier shots. Late in the round, Ocasio began to use a jab which set up a beautiful short right on the button. Rodriquez crumbled to the canvas for the second time. Ocasio would not let him off the hook and finished the job moments later with two destructive body shots. Rodriquez slumped to his hands and knees. The referee had seen enough and called a halt to the contest at .38 seconds of round two.

“I never had a training camp like I did this time,” said Ocasio who spoke on his keys to victory. “I felt very comfortable. We worked on the body shots.  That is what it came down to and It worked so I am satisfied.”

“There was talk of my fighting for the PA State Title on December 8th, but it fell through reiterated Ocasio.   “Tonight I made a statement in front of Main Event Promotions, Goosen Tutor Promotions, Peltz Boxing Promotions in association with BAM Boxing Promotions, so whatever title is out there, I am ready to fight for it. Just bring on the belts!!!”
